There was also a discussion of the theoretical work being carried out to calibrate the C-3 risk of variation in interest rates and to what extent the valuation actuary can properly recognize the risk of loss from changes in the interest rate environment within the framework of valuations laws and regulations.

The use of a simple setback in age to provide for improving mortality has proven to be quite satisfactory and eliminates the expense of calculation and maintenance of voluminous projected tables. Description: From a session at the 2002 Valuation Actuary Symposium, held in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, September 19–20, 2002 Discussion of issues and the impact of current statutory valuation requirements for life insurance policies. Requirements covered include the Actuarial Standard of Practice on XXX, Actuarial Guideline AXXX, and Actuarial Guidelines 36 and 37. Products and issues discussed include nonlevel premium or nonlevel benefit insurance e.g., selective term, universal life with secondary guarantees or shadow accounts, determination of X factors, interpretation issues regarding XXX, variable life, and variable universal life, equity-indexed universal life, and the new CSO mortality table.

Description: The Society's Task Force to Study Risk of Loss from Changes in the Interest Rate Environment C-3 Risk Task Force was formed in March 1981 with the charge to quantify C-3 risk. The Task Force made a preliminary report as part of a panel discussion on C-3 risk at the Society's October 1981 meeting in Atlanta. This presentation provides an update on the progress to date and its future plans.

Description: Results of an industry survey on life insurance companies' efforts to implement the recently adopted Life Risk-Based Capital Phase II Instructions, which include new requirements for variable annuity contracts. Adopted by the NAIC on October 14, 2005, the new requirements are effective for year-end 2005. Also discusses a summary of the requirements set forth in the instructions.
